I was initially suspicious and enthralled by this drawing found on flickr, drawn by user Megan VanGroll.
I love Coco Puffs like you wouldn’t believe. It’s the end all and be all of comfort food. Taking a bath in chocolately milk and crunchy cereal is a hedonistic fantasy of mine. Here it is – depicted in a painting.
But what was the artist trying to say? Although I was raised on art and don’t feel embarrassed by nu/de women, feminist viewpoints regard this practice as dubious. As the Guerrilla Girls say, less than 10 percent of paintings in art galleries are by women but more than 90 percent of the paintings are of na/ked women! Is this just another objectification, touting the “female form” as “exquisite” and “divine”?
The artist is a women’s studies major at North Texas U. Her other drawings depict the “female form” in various scenarios: hanging clothes, getting arrested, throwing out the trash, pumping gas.
Another of my favorites:

Let’s break this down. A na/ked woman buying meat. Women, especially their bodies, are commodified and displayed in almost the same fashion. Here’s a na/ked woman. And she’s buying meat. What do you call that? A metaphor? Irony?
I don’t know, but I get it.

PS – I apologize for the backslashes in some words. I’ve been getting traffic from amateur p*orn seekers on my site.
Thanks for reviewing my work! You raise some very interesting questions about the use of the nude figure. The statistics quoted by the Guerrilla Girls have strongly influenced my work. These are all questions I had to ask myself before I ventured into this kind of work.
I’ve inserted the link to my artist’s statement here for you and your readers to learn more about the themes I incorporate into my work. Informed feminist discourse and dialogue is crucial to the forming and visual evolution of these ideas, so I’d love to discuss this with you further.
